Oils for smooth hair and glowing skin
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is a tropical oil derived from the flesh of coconuts. Virgin coconut oil is less processed than the refined version, and preserves its sweet, coconut tropical flavour. I prefer using organic as much as possible.
Beyond cooking, coconut oil really shines as a beauty product. I use it on my hair as a moisture-boosting mask or I smooth a bit on my hair ends to reduce frizz. I also use it on my skin as a body moisturiser or lip balm. Extra-virgin coconut oil is the preferred choice when you’re using it for your body or hair.
Coconut oil can be a powerful weapon against the bacteria in your mouth that causes plaque, tooth decay, and gum disease. Swishing with coconut oil for 10 minutes a day, also known as oil pulling, can help reduce bacteria as effectively as rinsing with an antiseptic mouthwash.
Sesame Oil
This oil is one of the most commonly known products in Ayurveda due to its wide range of uses which traditionally include heart health, pain relief, and wound healing. Those who practice Ayurveda promote cold pressed black sesame oil. Thanks to its antioxidant content and anti-inflammatory properties, it may benefit your joints, skin, and hair. I will sometimes add it to my morning routine and massage it over my entire body, wait 20 minutes and then wash it off. Ayurveda also incorporates sesame oil into a practice called Shirodhara where warm oil is steadily poured on to your forehead to help calm and soothe your body and mind. For an at-home treatment, I apply sesame oil to my feet or head to prepare for a restful sleep at night.
